As I stressed, 'external' was the word that needed correcting - it wouldn't please Schubert. The String Quintet is all of a piece - or it should be, and wasn't on this occasion.

Anyway, I hope my two most diligent commenters won't come to blows.

Thanks, Howard. Will look at that anon, but I know Volkov always thinks 'outside the box'. Claire tells me your Gershwin comment obviously didn't 'take'. Assure you I never saw it. I'd said after the incredibly deep performance at Southrepps this time last year - I'm back here now awaiting Vaughan Williams and Mendelssohn at 11am - that I didn't want to hear it live again for at leasr another five years. And yet Friday night's performance in the 12th century church in Rosendal up the Hardanger Fjord was so interesting, because the somewhat anaemic Brentano Quartet were underpinned by the great - I had no idea until now how great - Sol Gabetta, who made one listen to that underpinning second cello role like never before. Isn't it the truth, and indeed, perhaps the measure of what makes a masterpiece. I very much look forward to the coming season, and of course your Prom report brings back fond memories of my one and only time attending (so far) in your company. The photo of the Albert Memorial at night bears strong resemblance to its look, with the storm clouds gathering, that night.Susan Scheidhttps://prufrocksdilemma.wordpress.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1248503935075362425.post-76972551505218037722016-08-12T20:23:04.461+01:002016-08-12T20:23:04.461+01:00Actually, Elizabeth, it was reasonably funny at th...Actually, Elizabeth, it was reasonably funny at the time - the new piece was not compelling, and Gardner's interpretation of Also sprach Zarathustra uninteresting in the extreme. I did want to focus on the very good performance of The Planets, though, which is where I thought the rucksack would come in useful. I know now that I have to exercise restraint with such people, or I could be sued for the laying on of hands. Anyway, they got red-faced with anger and I merely shouted 'shame on you' as I exited, but not in fury. Though the situation was not funny, your description of it had me laughing out loud! The scribbler sounds possibly unhinged. I love your rucksack solution! You couldn't have known that, while it would save you from physical assault, it could not block out the "singing" of his replacement. What a pair! Brave you, returning the following afternoon, despite the possibility of ending up next to the same two again! And we take delight, along with you, in finding yourself, instead, in the company of charming and attentive young listeners. I could almost wish for pictures of all those who peopled your experiences, but your lively descriptions have them all clearly in my head. -- ElizabethAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
