If you refer to all three, that should do the trick.

All best, and apologies it's taken so long to reply - unable to access the blog down in deepest Wiltshire.

DavidDavidhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14506881804082382739noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1248503935075362425.post-21366112097049913112014-08-22T15:04:43.120+01:002014-08-22T15:04:43.120+01:00Hi,

Had we not been spoiled by Ray Fearon the previous Friday, many of us would have been more generous to Mr. Meredith.

It was also recent history which inclined me to be kind to Shapovalov. He did a fantastic job in Iolanta (still with the music in front of him, admittedly), filling the late Sergey Larin's shoes pretty indefatigably. On Tuesday he was no more than serviceable, but at least both were game to take on the Undine duet, which I'm assuming was thrown at them at the last minute. How wonderful to hear that, and to get the 'Swan Lake version' in last night's much more mixed bag. More on that anon. I'm off to talk on Tchaik at the RFH now.Davidhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14506881804082382739noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1248503935075362425.post-1599854625872446102008-11-01T11:15:00.000+00:002008-11-01T11:15:00.000+00:00I broadly agree with your comments about Jurowski/...I broadly agree with your comments about Jurowski/OAE Tchaikovsky, with two exceptions. Rhys Meredith may not be everyone's favourite speaker of Shakespeare, but he was on top of the task, which, in that situation, was by no means easy. Most actors would probably have opted for using a script, especially with all those music cues to memorise, but Meredith was brave, mobile and clear - one must give him that.

By contrast, the tenor, whom you let off very lightly, seemed to think it would be alright to stand next to the marvellous Tatiana with only the slightest familiarity with the score. He struggled throughout, vocally and musically, and gave no sort of performance. Meredith was, at least, professional.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
