The display spaces felt cramped and dark, aside from two large recreated rooms that were virtually empty. The items on display throughout were mostly decorative—no paintings, eg. The placard headings were almost uniformly silly, very dumbed down, and the perspective of the commentary had more to do with English absorption of the work of other places than celebration of what the UK itself has brought to the artistic table. We found things to enjoy, but we wouldn’t recommend a trip to the Met for this reason alone. When I think of the gorgeous job the Met did when refurbishing its Islamic galleries, it’s hard to fathom what went wrong here. It made us wonder whether their collection as a whole is weak in British art and craft.Susanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15674930917585246294noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1248503935075362425.post-54067971055600059952022-02-12T11:50:17.425+00:002022-02-12T11:50:17.425+00:00I hope you'll blog about your impressions of t...I hope you'll blog about your impressions of the revamped British galleries. Haven't been to an exhibition or suchlike since we came back, but the Turin museums and galleries as well as the stupendous Kiefer and Baselitz exhibitions continue to resonate (wish i had time to write about them).

Under Christie, the Handel experience should be glorious!Davidhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14506881804082382739noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1248503935075362425.post-29143390623235920842022-02-12T01:34:27.474+00:002022-02-12T01:34:27.474+00:00What a joyous journey, and such hopeful signs of t...What a joyous journey, and such hopeful signs of the spring yet to come. We have had a couple days of warmer weather here, and it served as another reminder that winter will end at some point. Our lives have so been constricted, even the smallest signs of life are enormously welcome. We had a lovely walk across Central Park to the Met Museum a couple days ago—our object was the newly reconstituted British galleries. While we enjoyed the excursion, we did not think much of the curators’ vision (or lack thereof, more like it), though it was fun to see the towers of teapots. In a week or so, I will attend my very first live concert since the pandemic began: William Christie and the Juilliard artists in Handel's "Il Trionfo del Tempo e del Disinganno" (Part 1). It is right round the corner from our NYC apartment, which is a great benefit, too. Back to the natural world: you must be seeing snowdrops now, yes?Susanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15674930917585246294noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1248503935075362425.post-83231053313184951612022-02-07T08:25:11.678+00:002022-02-07T08:25:11.678+00:00Thank you, dear Sophie, and I expect to see some b...Thank you, dear Sophie, and I expect to see some beautiful shots of Siena in the spring - don't forget that at the foot of the hill at the Botanics there's an orchard of diverse fruit trees which should look stunning in blossom.

And hope you saw the 'Buon natale da Siena' in an earlier post, with several photos of our happy Xmas with you.Davidhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14506881804082382739noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1248503935075362425.post-13412625628024071882022-02-06T23:14:59.691+00:002022-02-06T23:14:59.691+00:00What a stunning collection of photos!

You asked me to comment or correct flowers: the beautiful white one you thought might be Hesperantha is I think Camassia Leichtlinii alba. Dead right on Southern Marsh orchid though. And the 'Cuban Lly', Scilla peruviana is totally missnamed (not by you) as it doesn't come from either Cuba or Peru, but is native to Europe. I remember yelling at Andrew to 'stop the car!!!!!' near Ronda once. He screeched to a halt and I walked back to a small group of them growing in what must be a ditch in winter. After that I found them quite a few more times. They are hugely impressive as wild flowers, so exotic looking.Deborah van der Beeknoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1248503935075362425.post-68789168550894870642022-01-30T10:53:00.622+00:002022-01-30T10:53:00.622+00:00Thanks, Liam - it was a timely labour of love. Thanks, Liam - it was a timely labour of love.Davidhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14506881804082382739noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1248503935075362425.post-5428585600306763462022-01-30T00:04:35.191+00:002022-01-30T00:04:35.191+00:00Congratulations on very beautiful photos Congratulations on very beautiful photos Liam mansfieldhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07788263195389627235noreply@blogger.com
