Auguri da Capua e Siena

Such riches, as usual on our Italian pre-Xmas wanderings. No time to chronicle right now, but we were well served with spontaneous events in curious Capua, a quiet centre from which to excurt to the second largest amphitheatre of the Roman Empire (in Santa Maria Capua Vetere, old Capua in other words, and to the ravishingly situated Sant'Angelo in Formis, an hour or so's walk from our homely base, with its amazing sequence of late 11th century Byzantine/Latin frescoes. For now this one with a presepe will do.

The above banda romp in Capua's main square, overlooked by the massive cornerstones from the amphitheatre embedded in the town hall, was preceded by an extraordinary procession of mini Santas led by pifferari, zampognari etc.

After three equally fascinating days in Benevento, we arrived for our now-annual seasonal celebration with Sophie in her Siena haven. The Duomo never fails to stun - after wandering the contrade churches for early celebrations, we went to have a quick look on the eve.

A jolly Swedish breakfast is to be followed by turkey with all the trimmings and a healthy mix of Italians, a Swede, an American, an Irishman and an Englishman. Clocking off now. Buona festa e buon anno.
