After an obsessively wonderful term entirely Czechia-centric - in the opera class, Janáček's Jenůfa and Martinů's Julietta, the bigger picture from Smetana onwards for the Thursday course - it's time to cast the net wider for Spring 2022. Though I was disappointed by much in Oliver Mears' new Royal Opera production of Verdi's Rigoletto at the start of the season - it returns this year with a different cast - Antonio Pappano certainly highlighted the astonishing originality of so much in it. So it's time to return to that masterpiece. And to Britten's Peter Grimes, which inevitably cropped up a lot during our half-term on Albert Herring.
The logistics: 10 two-hour Monday afternoon classes, running from 2.30pm to 4.30pm and starting tomorrow. £100 for the course. If you can't attend in person, I send out videos the morning after.
